The Peacock's Stone

  • About The Peacock's Stone

"Does every action we make, every word we speak create our reality?

What if our reality were only another's myth?

What if you, a child of eleven-summers,

went out for a walk,

found a friend,

picked up a rock along the riverbank,

and turned your village upside down?

"So my story begins—as a child, with a child's dreams and a child's fears . . ."

The Peacock's Stone is a mythopoeic fantasy set on ancient earth. Shahumin, an eleven-summer-child, is invited into her grandfather's fire circle of wisdom where she learns the old stories that have shaped her people. Encountering a strange, pale boy on one of her river forages, Shahumin steps into a new story, a story that will test the limits of love and loyalty.

Shahumin experiences the terrible power of words, story, and false beliefs, and how it is only love that distinguishes the true from the false.

". . . looking through fear, we name only fearful things, looking through anger, we name only what makes us angry; but when we look through love, then, perhaps we can see how once we saw before, as Woman and Man had seen, so long ago, in the Garden . . . "

". . . a wonderful book; an important book . . ."
stated Madeleine L'Engle, author of
A Wrinkle in Time

"The Peacock's Stone is a well-written, moving book set in an intriguing world. Faith Richardson has created a beautiful story that will not only captivate students, but will teach them about tolerance. This tale challenges students to reflect on the ever-present issues of tolerance and prejudice. The Peacock's Stone is a valuable resource to educators, parents, and counselors due to the lessons it teaches, and the high-quality prose which flows throughout all its pages."
